Summary of Graduate Degrees and Programs

The Department of Computer Science offers Masters, Applied Scientist, and Doctor of Science degrees. A Graduate Certificate in Computer Security and Information Assurance is designed for practicing professionals who want a competitive edge. Our faculty are conducting cutting edge research in Bioinformatics and Biomedical Computing, Computer Security and Information Assurance, Digital Media, Networking and Mobile Computing, Pervasive Computing and Embedded Systems, and Algorithms and Theory. We are a relatively small department offering individualized attention to our students. Our annual research funding of around $3.5 Million have come from NSA, NASA, NIH, NIST, NSF, DARPA, and AOL. We place a great deal of emphasis on creative interdisciplinary solutions to real-world problems.

We offer our graduate programs both downtown DC, blocks from the White House as well as our Graduate Campus located in Northern Virginia.

MS Degree

The MS degree is based on 10 courses (30 credit hours). A student may do a Thesis but this is optional. There are no comprehensive examinations. Three of the 10 courses are required (core courses). The other 7 courses can be selected based on consultation with the student's advisor. Two of these courses can come from a different department.

DSc Degree

The Doctoral degree is based on coursework as well as research that leads to a dissertation. It is recommended that students interested in the doctoral degree contact the faculty whose interests best fit his/her interest. Areas of research focus centers around these topics: Computer Security and Information Assurance, Software Engineering and Systems, Bioinformatics and Biomedical Computing, Networking and mobile computing, Pervasive Computing and Embedded Systems, and Algorithms and Theory.

Graduate Certificates

The following two graduate certificates are available.
  • Graduate Certificate in Computer Security and Information Assurance

  • The objective of this certificate program is to provide a coordinated four-course sequence in computer security and information assurance that emphasizes concepts in Computer Security augmented with current industry standard techniques and challenges. It provides an alternative to the full M.S. program for practicing computer scientists and other information technology personnel who wish to extend their education beyond the B.S. level, and to those who wish to acquire up-to-date knowledge in the burgeoning field of computer and network security. This certificate is available both as an accelerated program that can be finished in 5 months or through our normal class enrollment.

  • Graduate Certificate in IT for Justice and Public Safety

  • This 5-course 15 credit program teaches students how to apply computer science technology to meet the needs of data sharing, data management and security in the field of law enforcement and justice.
