Transfer of Credit

A graduate student in a degree program in the Department Computer Science may transfer course credit for courses taken at an accredited and recognized institution toward the degree program at GW provided that

1. the courses taken at another institution are at a level of study equivalent to that being pursued at GW;
2. the grade received for each course is either A or B;
3. the courses were not counted toward a completed degree at any institution;
4. both the student's academic advisor and the Department Chairman approve.

A maximum of 6 credit hours ( for a master's or professional degree candidate, or a doctoral candidate whose highest earned degree is a master's ) or 24 credit hours ( for a doctoral candidate whose highest earned degree is a bachelor's degree) may be transferred to meet the degree requirement of any graduate degree in CS. This limit applies to courses taken at other universities as well as those taken at George Washington University in a nondegree program. Thus, normally you may not transfer more than 6 hours of courses, even if the courses are those offered by the CS deparment, if the courses were taken while not enrolled in an CS degree program.

For the Professional and Doctoral degree programs, there is an additional requirement that courses transferred to these programs must have credit earned no longer ago than five years prior to admission to the programs in CS.

You may apply for transfer of credit with the appropriate form. Prepare the form and submit it to your Academic Advisor along with a catalog description or other descriptive material of the course taken. Upon approval by your Advisor, forward the application to the Department Chair for approval.

If you wish to take a course at another university while enrolled in a degree program at GW, with the intent to transfer credit for the course to the GW degree program, you must first obtain permission from CS to do so. A form is available for the purpose.
