Petitions

A student may need to request an exception or petition the department to grant a waiver in the application of a certain regulation because of special circumstances or to seek redress of grievances.

Requests regarding the academic program and the regulations pertaining thereto normally are addressed orally to the student's academic advisor. Examples of such requests are to (1) alter the plan of study (Form 1), (2) alter or remove deficiency course requirements imposed at admission, (3) request transfer of credit for courses taken elsewhere, (4) permit an undergraduate course to be taken for graduate credit, or (5) increase or reduce the number of courses permitted outside the major area. Many other examples regarding rules and regulations could be given in which the academic advisor may confirm changes.

Requests for change of grade in a course can be considered only by the instructor of the course in which the grade was earned.

Exceptionally, a student may need to petition the department or school faculty. Such instances may occur because the request is of such serious nature that the chairman, or the faculty as a whole, is required to examine the petition, or that the student believes that a decision of the academic advisor is in error. Such petitions should be made only for a substantial reason.

Petitions to the department should be written. The written document should clearly state the situation which causes the student to petition, including all facts necessary to understand the nature of the petition, as well as the specific actions that are desired by the petitioner. Usually the petitioner should discuss his petition with the academic advisor and other appropriate members of the faculty.

All petitions should be addressed to the chairman of the department.
