Late Adding of Courses

Normally a student enrolls in all his courses for a semester at the time of registration, just prior to the beginning of classes each semester. A student may occasionally have reason to enroll in classes after the registration period is over (for example, one or more of a student's courses could be canceled--see the "Canceled Courses" section below). Registration done after the registration period ends is referred to as "late registration".
Each semester a date is published as the "last day to add" courses. This date is typically about two weeks after the semester begins. Prior to the last date to add, a student may add acourse by filling out the course to be added in the appropriate section of the Registration Transaction Form, provided enrollment in the class is not prohibited (as may occur if the enrollment limit for the class has been reached). Approval by signature of the CS department and the student's academic advisor is required on the form. There is a late registration fee charged for late registration; this fee is payable at the time of late registration in the amount specified in the University Bulletin.

After the last day to add a course for the semester has passed, a student must get special permission to add the course. This permission requires the approval of the course instructor, the student's advisor, and the CS department. A student who wishes to enroll after the last day should consult the department for advice. A late fee is charged for this enrollment.

Late Dropping of Courses

Dropping a course is required if a student wishes to transfer from one course to another, or from one section of a course to a different section of the same course.

A student may wish to drop a course after classes begin. This situation is referred to as "late dropping of a course". A student may drop without academic penalty prior to the date referred to as the "last day to drop a course." This date is published each semester within the University--typically 28 days from the start of classes during the regular semesters, and 7 days during summer sessions. Application to drop a course is made on the Registration Transaction Form. In order to drop a course, the student must be passing the course (with a grade of C or better for graduate students) and have the approval of the instructor, the student's advisor, and the CS department. Tuition fees paid for a course which is dropped may not be fully refunded, depending upon the date the course is dropped. The applicable rates are given in the University Schedule of Classes each semester.

With sufficient reason, a course may be dropped following the "last day to drop," until the last day of classes. This procedure is called Late Withdrawal. The usual Registration Transaction form is completed, signed by the advisor and dean, and submitted to the Registrar. Withdrawal from a course after the "last day to drop" results in a W being placed on the transcript. Tuition is not refunded.

Canceled Courses

Graduate courses may be canceled following the registration period. Usually cancellation of a course, or a section of a course, is caused by lack of sufficient enrollment or by lack of a suitable instructor.

When a course or section is canceled, the student may wish to register for another course or for another section of the same course. This is accomplished by filling out the appropriate section of the Registration Transaction Form.

Even if a student does not wish to enroll in another course or section, it is advisable that the canceled course be dropped in order to ensure a full refund of the course fee.
