14. Use this space for any comments you may have about the course, the instructor, readings, etc.
  • The professor did not teach to the course description at all. Component based software is supposed to cover topics such as CORBA and EJBs. However, we were "taught" things that are not only computer science related but common knowledge. Subject such as shopping carts and wikis are so common place that they do not belong at the graduate level. Anyone who is computer literate uses these things on a regular basis.
  • This course did not cover any of the subject matter that was advertised. The material would not be appropriate or interesting for any class, let alone a graduate level computer science course. Useful bits of knowledge included gems like "you need an account to use Ebay," and how to edit a Wiki page. Nearly the entire course was common knowledge to anyone who has used the Internet. Lectures were as absurd as the material. On several occasions, the professor would literally Google the subject he was going to speak about in the middle of class, and then start reading the resulting pages or powerpoints that came up aloud, having never seen them before. The professor seemed like a fairly nice individual, but what goes on in this class really needs to be revealed.
  • Not enough feedback on grades. Grading criteria never made clear. No set schedule for presentations, no set way to sign up for a particular product for presentation. No syllabus provided in class. Course content does not match title--"Component Based Enterprise Software"; expected this class to deal with subjects like CORBA, EJB, J2EE, etc. and their application to the enterprise. Did not expect topics like "Wikis" or "RSS"; certainly didn't expect discussions of XML editors. This material would MIGHT be fine for those considering an associate's degree in Information Systems, but is completely inappropriate and remedial for those pursing a graduate degree in computer science. Either this course should be completely retooled or else it should just be dropped.
  • Needs to provide more feedback on exams. Questions on Midterm needed to be more specific.
